We learnt a lot in Wadley though. A twenty minute walk revealed that about every third plant in this desert is either food or serves some medicinal purpose. Wild spinach, or green Amaranth grows here, lots of it too, probably because of all the rain they've had here this year. We ate it for dinner. We picked Estafiate too and set it out too dry. In Veracruz we drank tea of a different strain of the same plant to get rid of stumach bugs. Another usefull plant we encountered is called Sangre de Grado. Good for sores in your mouth and against hairloss. Don't taste it though because it is so bitter it will make your mouth go numb. Guess how I found out about that. We looked for another plant, Damiana de San Luis, with very aromatic yellow flowers that can serve as a herb to spice up pastas. Don't add too much though because it will give you the shits.. Guess again.. the greatest find for me however was a strain of wild tobacco, reason for me to pick up my old hobby of inhaling smoke. I picked so to dry, made easy by the fact that Wadley is in the middle of a desert at 2000 meter altitude and a relative humidity of next to nothing. My bottom lip developed a canyon-like crack which was properly bothering me for over a week. Proves how dry it is and that mezcal is bad for you. |
